South Africa faces a growing early literacy crisis, with 81% of Grade 4 learners unable to read for meaning. Strengthening reading before Grade 4 starts with mother-tongue instruction, access to storybooks, and well-trained teachers. By supporting families, empowering educators, and promoting bilingual education, we can build a nation where every child learns to read, and reads to learn.

Grade R is the foundation for lifelong learning. During this stage, children develop critical social, emotional, and thinking skills through play, curiosity, and discovery.
